Dr. Faisal Khan Reports on Risk Management




On the afternoon of April 18th, Dr. Faisal Khan started his visit in University of Science and Technology (USTC) by addressing a report on dynamics risk management of hazardous operations in State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) lecture hall.

Safety, as a public issue, has arisen raising attention since many incidents happening recently. Accidents pose sever damage to society and economy as well as bring casualties. From Deepwater Horizon disaster to recently happened explosion in Xiangshui county, Jiangsu province, Liangshan wildfire and fire in Notre Dame de Paris, hazards and accidents exist along daily life. To prevent the potential incidents and control risk, dynamic risk management is needed.

The report began with Dr. Khan’s own experience in study. He notified the raising importance of safety research, and then introduced Center for Risk Integrity and Safety and Risk Engineering (C-RISE), which is founded by him.

During the report, Dr. Khan explained concept and methodology of risk assessment in simple language. Students responded actively and Dr. Khan communicated with students in Q&A sessions. The report ends with a long round of applause.

The topic, safety issue, is one of the hot points recently. The lecture popularized knowledge including safety, security and health which are closely related to daily operation and life.

Dr. Faisal Khan is Canada Research Chair Director and professor, founder of C-RISE. His research area includes offshore safety and engineering, inherent safety, risk management, and risk-based integrity assessment and management. He is actively involved with multinational oil and gas industries on the issue of safety and assess integrity.

Professor JI Jie from SKLFS hosted the report.
