Two Alumni Win Two of the Three Major Mathematics Award by Chinese Mathematical Society
On Nov 21st, the 13th National Congress of the Chinese Mathematical Society was held in Foshan, Guangdong province. At the opening ceremony, Chinese mathematical society announced the winners of the 2019 Loo-Keng Hua Mathematics Award, Shiing-shen Chern Mathematics Award and Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award.
Professor FENG Keqin, a 59th grade alumnus from the school of Mathematical Sciences of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), won the 14th Loo-Keng Hua Mathematics Award, a lifetime achievement award for Chinese mathematicians. Alumnus QIU Guohuan (SA1001) was awarded the 14th Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award.
FENG Keqin
FENG Keqin, a 5911 alumnus of USTC, is a pioneer in the study of algebraic number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry in China. His major academic contributions include: (1) Research on the independence of circular units: he was the first domestic scholar who published algebraic number theory paper in an internationally renowned journal in the 1970s; (2) Congruence study: he determined several series of non-congruent numbers with the help of graph theory, verified the BSD conjecture of the corresponding elliptic curve, and stimulated the further study of congruence problems; (3) Graph theory and its application in number theory: he published the biggest characteristic root of graph in cooperation with LI Qiao, which had a great influence on graph theory; (4) Study on stream cryptosystem key construction Boolean function: In 2008, he worked with Carlet at one of the top conferences of cryptography to construct stream cryptosystem key Boolean function with anti-multiple attack characteristics, which became a breakthrough in the field of cryptography and was called Carlet-Feng function. (5) Quantum error correction code and quantum information mathematical theory: he took the lead in the research of quantum code in China and gave completely different characterization of quantum code; (6) Talent training and subject development in number theory discipline: he has made outstanding contributions in talent training of number theory, arithmetic geometry, cryptography and coding field. Many of his students grow into domestic famous young mathematicians, and are internationally known in number theory, algebraic geometry, algebra, cryptography and coding fields.
QIU Guohuan
QIU Guohuan is a research assistant professor of Chinese university of Hong Kong. In 2010, He was admitted to the school of Mathematical Science of USTC from northwest university, where he studied with professor MA Xinan. During the graduate period, he studied hard and performed excellently. During the doctoral period, he wrote several influential articles independently or in collaboration with others. In 2016, he received his doctor of science degree from USTC. His main research field is nonlinear partial differential equations and geometric analysis. He worked with his collaborators to solve the Newman boundary problem of Hysen equation and the internal estimation of quantitative curvature equation. Together with professor MA Xinan, he successfully solved a conjecture made 30 years ago by professor N. Trudinger, a world-renowned expert on partial differential. In 2015, he went to McGill university in Canada for joint training and postdoctoral research. In collaboration with professor GUAN Pengfei, he studied the internal regularity of curvature equation and basically solved an important open problem in the field of completely nonlinear equation. Then the three dimensional general case of the problem is solved independently through ingenious geometric observation. He has published 7 academic papers so far, several of which have been published in Duke Math J., Comm., Math., and Phys.
Introduction to Loo-Keng Hua Mathematics Award and Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award:
Mr. HUA Luogeng is a famous mathematician of China. He loved his motherland deeply, dedicated to Science business, and made outstanding contributions to developing mathematics career and cultivating talents in his lifetime. In order to cherish the great achievement of Mr. HUA Luogeng, to encourage mathematicians who made contributions to the development of Chinese mathematics careers, as well as to stimulate the development of mathematics of our country, the Chinese Mathematical Society together with Hunan Education Press decided to set up “Loo-Keng Hua Mathematics Award” and host it every two years jointly. Since 1992, it has been held for 13 consecutive sessions. Two people will be awarded in every session, and the reward is 100,000 yuan.
Professor ZHONG Jiaqing was very concerned about the development of the mathematics career of China and had striven for it throughout his life. In order to commemorate him and achieve his last wish of developing China’s mathematics career, some Chinese scholars of mathematics and some Chinese mathematicians in America co-organized the Jia-qing Zhong fund, and set up the Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award in 1987. Since the year 1988, the Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award has been held for 13 sessions, a total of 62 doctoral students and graduate students had won the award, and the winners have all become the backbone in the field of mathematics. The Jia-qing Zhong Mathematics Award has played a favorable role in promoting the development of China’s mathematics.
