University Presidents’ Forum Highlights Education to Face the Future




University Presidents’ Forum was held at University of Science and Technology of China on the morning of September 19th.

PAN Jianwei, the Executive Vice President of USTC chaired the forum.

Themed as “ Education to Face the Future”, the forum this year brings together more than 40 presidents, experts and scholars from Chinese and foreign universities, including University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, Wuhan University, The University of Hong Kong, National Tsing Hua University, The University of Tokyo and Princeton University, for the discussion of the development of world-class universities against a new backdrop and the share of views and experiences in cultivating innovative talents and the conduction of in-depth exchanges on educational innovation. Through communication, experts and scholars reached consensus on good education, excellent university and talents.

University Presidents’ Forum was held at USTC. 

 “The world today is witnessing a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation which are reconstructing global innovation and reshaping global economics. With the rapid development of economy and society, the aspiration of our people for a better life grows and the development of educational innovation appears more important and urgent than ever before. Opening up and cooperation is of great importance to education innovation,” Li Guoying, the Governor of Anhui Province, said in his speech. “This forum embraces high-end dialogue of university spirit and innovative ideas and enlightens wisdom and consensus. I sincerely hope that more colleges and universities both from home and abroad will come to Anhui for more exchanges and cooperation. I expect our joint participation of innovation and development will create a better future for Anhui.”

Life of a university lies in its spirit. And a university’s spirit is the source of its everlasting vigor and vitality. “USTC is born to nurture talents who are excel in science and technology, in particular emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary disciplines. USTC speak out loud the philosophy of great virtue and profound knowledge for a balance between teaching and scientific research,” said SHU Gequn, the Secretary of the Party Committee of USTC. “Integration of science and education, emphasis on education and cooperation in educating people will help build USTC into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics as soon as possible. This forum serves as a platform for sharing insights, achieving agreement and reaching consensus. I hope that experts and scholars can brainstorm ideas and gather more achievements in the forum.”

SHU Gequn, the Secretary of the Party Committee of USTC, made a speech.

 “Basic science and applied science will be tightly integrated and complemented in the future. Universities will respond to upgrade the two current major models of education, comprehensive education and professional-technical education, for a more comprehensive direction,” said BAO Xinhe, the President of USTC. “While paying more attention to basic scientific research, USTC will develop new disciplines and integrate basic science with applied science to promote multi-disciplinary integration. USTC will carry out a student-oriented reform that encourages students’ scientific research and exploration in a variety of fields. More choices for our students, more chances to build USTC into a world-class university,” BAO added.

BAO Xinhe, the President of USTC, delivered a speech.

Invited participants both from home and abroad made keynote speeches and shared views on hot spot issues such as innovation, entrepreneurship and talent cultivation.

Against the current backdrop of global economic integration, educational innovation and talents cultivation have been integral to the country's soft power. Brought together the wisdom spark of experts from all over the world, the forum will play a positive role in inspiring education to face the future.
