为提高科研国际化水平，我校一直积极推动国际人才交流与合作，充分利用各类引智项目吸引外国专家来校访问和工作。每年上千人次的国际专家学者来我校访问，部分外籍专家长期在校工作。

USTC is always committed to world-class excellence in education and research. We have been taking advantage of opportunities to invite international talents and experts to visit and work at USTC. Each year, the university embraces nearly 2,000 visiting scholars and professionals. A significant number of full-time international faculty work at various USTC schools.

古语云：“有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎。”为欢迎远道而来的国际学者，满足不同层次水平和不同停留时间的来访外国专家的需求，学校不断完善相关的软硬件设施，努力提升外国专家对中国社会的参与感和归属感。

The Analects of Confucius once said, “It is always a pleasure to greet a friend from afar.” To welcome scholars from around the world, we are sparing no effort into building a truly international campus and improving on-campus infrastructure to engage foreign visiting scholars and experts in the daily campus life and create a strong sense of belonging.

今年由于疫情原因，国际学术往来被迫中断或转移线上，我校部分外籍专家也无法正常返校。但即使相隔万里，对科学的追求和共通的情感仍将我们紧紧联系在一起。“海内存知己，天涯若比邻。”相信在不久之后，世界人民将战胜疫情，迎来美好的明天。而在这一天到来之前，“花径缘客扫，蓬门为君开”，我们将做足准备，欢迎各位国际学者的再次到来！

Due to the emerging pandemic threat, international academic exchanges are severely interrupted, and some are brought to a halt. Many programs are forced to move online. Some of our international faculty members had no choice but to extend their stay out of China. Though oceans apart, we are bonded tightly by the unwavering pursuit of science and deep-rooted universal human emotions. “A close friend afar brings a distant land near.” Our faith in the victory of the fight against COVID-19 is resolute and brighter days are around the corner. Before the day finally comes, we will make sure to be prepared and hope for the day we will see each other again.

秉承着这样美好的期待，国际合作与交流部在校内相关部门的支持和帮助下，为做好外国专家到校后的服务支撑工作，减少校内老师的外专接待压力，特编制了国际学者全英文指南手册《Handbook for International Scholars》。

手册内容详实，包罗万象，旨在帮助外国专家到访学校后第一时间了解各项工作流程，熟悉校园环境，同时也为外专提供丰富的校内及合肥市内的生活和文化活动信息。

With the wonderful wish kept in mind and the assistance from the Office of International Cooperation of USTC, we created this Handbook for International Scholars to better help foreign visiting scholars familiarize the campus and the Hefei city and access necessary support and information. The Handbook can also serve as a guide to local events and culture.

Part.1 Introduction

手册扉页，包信和校长致辞欢迎来自世界各国的国际学者到访这所充满创新的“科学家的摇篮”，期待与之携手共创美好未来。

The preface of the handbook presents the welcome remarks from President Bao Xinhe to all international visiting scholars who have come to the “Cradle of Scientific Elite.”

安徽省拥有“人间仙境”黄山与极具特色的徽派建筑，省会合肥市是历史与现代完美结合的代表，通过简单介绍，希望帮助外国专家对这座城市的历史与文化有一个初步的认知。

Mount Huangshan, which is often referred to as “the fairyland on the earth,” and the unique Huizhou Architecture are both located in Anhui Province. The capital city Hefei is a perfect representation of merging modernity into cultural heritage. We hope to provide an understanding of the history and culture of the city through a brief introduction.

熟悉一个大学最好的方式是亲自探索校园每个角落, 这里我们特别向您推荐“UFO计划“（外国人校园融入计划），通过科大的合作老师在网上预约，我们的学生校园友好大使将带给外国专家一个详细丰富而又个性化的校园介绍，开启一段有趣的校园之旅！

We highly recommend you to participate in our UFO (University Facility Orientation) Project and get to know USTC better than through exploring the campus yourself. Please make your appointment online, and our USTC student ambassadors will be in touch. International visiting scholars can count on them to start a personalized and exciting journey unfolding the USTC campus and culture.

Part.2 Administrative Procedures

为服务于外国专家的行政手续办理，手册第二部分整理了相关资料，包括入校前有关合同签署、入境登记、签证申请以及工作许可证、居留许可证办理等方面，对办理各类证件所需材料一一进行罗列，并对可能遇到的问题给出了详细的解决方案，帮助外国专家迅速完成手续，顺利开始异国科研。

This part contains information and guidance to assist international visiting scholars with various administrative procedures, including contract signing, report of entry, application of your visa, work permit and residence permit, etc. Documents required to complete these procedures are thoroughly listed along with a Q&A.

 Part.3 科大生活
Part.3 Life at USTC

在USTC不仅有科研和学习，这里还有丰富多彩的生活与娱乐。手册第三部分将为外国专家的日常生活提供帮助。

从我们的国际学者落地中国开始，所需要的一系列衣食住行信息都记录在册，包括如何从北京、上海抵达合肥，如何办理校内住宿、校园一卡通，如何食堂就餐、乘坐校园巴士和使用邮递服务等；除此之外，还包括如何使用目前中国最流行的线上支付方式：Alipay和Wechat Pay；为初来乍到的外国专家介绍丰富的校园文化活动和市内休闲娱乐推荐地点，并贴心附上就医信息和校园安全的温馨提示。希望在USTC，您享受的不仅仅是工作，还有在中国文化氛围下的美好生活。

At USTC, research and study play an important part. A fantastic journey filled with fun and excitement happens here as well. In this part of the handbook, we provide assistance and essential information for international visiting scholars. It will help you navigate through day-to-day life in Hefei from the moment of your arrival in China.

Such information includes how to get to Hefei from all major domestic airports, applying for on-campus accommodation and the Campus ID Card, dining in the school cafeteria, riding school buses, and postal services.

You will also be introduced to set up the two most popular online payment methods in China – Alipay and Wechat Pay. If you are new to China, this part provides information regarding on-campus events and leisure activities in the city, critical medical information, and campus safety tips. We hope you enjoy your study here at USTC, as well as this incredible cultural experience.

手册第四部分为外国专家贴心地附上了英文校园地图、常用的电话号码及网站介绍，以备不时之需。

This part contains the English version of the campus map, commonly used phone numbers and websites in case of emergency.
